Santa Cruz  Kids in Nature

Summer Camps

WEEK 2  :  JUNE 15-19

Theme 1:Snakes, Lizards, and Frogs, Oh MY! Insight Into the World of Reptiles and Amphibians (NEW!)

All too often reptiles get a bad reputation for being scary or harmful (i.e. snakes!) but there is so much to learn about our local diversity of species and what makes each one unique. For example, did you know that our local California Newts can live 20-30 years, or that the native Rubber Boa snake is known for being particularly docile, or that Santa Cruz is home to an endangered Red Legged Frog, but that the UCSC arboretum houses a healthy population of them? Did you also know that we have Western Fence Lizards to thank for our low prevalence of Lymes Disease in ticks in Santa Cruz, because their blood causes a neutralisation of Lymes in ticks?

This camp will explore the wonderful world of the reptiles and amphibians we share our town with and learn from real scientists about how research is conducted to learn more about these creatures. Games, science, skill building, and art are all a part of this week of sleuthing for snakes, lizards, frogs and more!

Theme 2: Birds #2: Their Habits, Habitats, and Language! (In the Forest)

Calling all bird lovers and nature detectives! In this camp, students will learn how to use binoculars, field guides, and their own super-powered observation skills to learn more about the birds of Santa Cruz. We’ll hunt for nests, listen for baby birds, and maybe even catch a close-up glimpse of our feathered friends. Camp includes hiking, journaling, art, games, and plenty of playful detective work!

This camp will introduce students to the species living in the forest and organic gardens. Not required to have participated in Birds #1 camp.
